Candle Care Tips

All Lumaya scented candles are lovingly made to provide you with hours of fragrant bliss, and all correctly safety-tested for your peace of mind. To care for your candles properly to get the most out of them and maintain their high quality for longer - follow the below tips.

Burning your candle

The first time you burn your candle, make sure you light it long enough for the entire surface to melt. This will ensure your candle has a nice, even burn from then on - otherwise, you can experience 'tunnelling' which leaves a buildup of wax along the sides of the vessel.

Light your candle in a well ventilated room, away from drafts, fans, or open windows - which can cause sooting or uneven burning.

Always keep your candle on a safe, sturdy surface and away from pets or children. Never leave burning candles unattended.

When the candle is coming to its’ end and the wax is low, keep an eye on it and extinguish it when there is still wax at the bottom (approx. 10mm).

Caring for wicks

Keep the wax pool clear of debris including wick trimmings and matches, as these could act as secondary wicks and cause unbalanced burning/overburning.

The wick will likely move or slant if lit for too long. Always recentre the wick and then replace your candle lid, so that the wax can harden without any dust or debris falling into it.

If you see a flaming wick come close to the vessel wall, extinguish the flame and straighten the wick to prevent the vessel from cracking.

Once your candle has cooled, you can remove any excess soot head from the previous burn, and trim the wick (ideally using a wick trimmer), keeping it at 5mm. This will prevent any long/crooked wicks creating high flames, burning too fast, any smoking or sooting - and allow the candle to burn evenly, and increase its' scent throw.

Storing your candle

When your candle isn't in use, store it in a cool & dry place and cover with its’ candle lid to protect the quality wax from debris or dust, which can dull its scent and cause problems during burning.

Condensation on the surface of a candle indicates that it has not been stored correctly, or has been stored for too long. Make sure to wipe this away with a paper towel before lighting.

Storing candles for too long can affect the scent, so use your candle in a reasonable time to make the most of its beautiful fragrance. You can always buy another!

NB: There are also safety labels on the bottom of each candle, specific to the makeup of the individual ingredients. Please always note these, and follow any instructions eg. “do not keep candle lit for 4+ hours”
